Words of Advice for Women Entering The Sneaker Industry

Entering the sneaker world as a woman brings forth a unique set of opportunities and challenges.

So, over on Instagram, we asked the SBYW community a couple of weeks back 'What words of advice would you give to a woman entering the sneaker industry?' Here is a collection of some of our favourite quotes and thoughtful advice that was shared, which we think are relevant for women but also for anyone looking to or already embarking on their journey in the creative world.

It’s 100% okay if you aren’t a sneakerhead

"I've been in the industry for over 18 years in the footwear design business, and I'm not a sneakerhead. Also, remember that designing a shoe that is coveted by sneakerheads, while gratifying, is also not the end-all, be-all. My most gratifying projects are the ones that resonate with and are accessible to all." - @_angela_mar10_

You have more power than you think

Often, we underestimate our capabilities and it's easy to overlook the strength we have, especially as a woman, feeling overshadowed by self-doubt or perceived limitations. We hold the power to shape outcomes, inspire change, and make a profound difference in the sneaker world. It's in recognising and embracing this inherent strength that we unlock our true potential.

Let your voice be heard. Don’t be afraid to speak up and be confident

Amidst the dynamics of a predominantly male professional landscape, your voice isn't merely a contribution; it's a crucial narrative that enriches discussions and decisions. Don't let the imbalanced atmosphere or those who don’t listen deter you. Embrace the power in your voice; it's a catalyst for change, an invitation for inclusivity, and a stepping stone for future generations of women in these spaces.

Feel the fear and do it anyway

Fear is a signal, not a stop sign. Embrace it as a catalyst for growth. Pushing through despite fear isn't just courageous; it's where breakthroughs happen. It's the choice to act despite uncertainty, leading to discoveries beyond anything we imagined!

Never doubt that you belong

Always remember: you belong where you are. Your skills, experiences, and perspective have earned you a seat at the table. Embrace the diversity you bring to the table, as it's your distinct viewpoint that often sparks innovation and fosters progress.

Don’t be afraid to be tenacious, believe in yourself, and don’t water down your experience

Embrace your tenacity; it's your strength. Self-belief is your superpower—never underestimate it. Your unfiltered experiences are your asset; they shape your unique perspective. Don't water them down; they're what make you, you.

Embrace every success and challenge and trust yourself and your worth

"After 8 years, I've seen that this industry is set up to still keep rolling when projects sink. And then some projects really hit! But no matter what, your worth as a person should never be determined by what you make. You are always you at the end of the day, with the highs and lows to challenge you to grow and know your worth." - @howdymica

Stay humble without selling yourself short, be yourself and take up space

“Take up space in the room and don't downplay your successes and the work you did to achieve them, it's not always about luck it's also hard work, skill, tenacity and courage.” - @helen.kirkum

If you're trying to get in: Keep going no matter what

“After being in the industry for over 20 years I can say that it hasn't been easy to do these things all the time but you have to believe in yourself and keep pushing.” - @rekha_purwaha
